Sporting Arsenal spectacles and gentle-mannered, Daniel Vettori appears a lot more like an alter ego than a tremendous hero.

But Vettori, 32, all but donned a cape just before launching his most recent rescue mission for New Zealand in the first Check towards Australia in Brisbane on Friday.

And he looks to have located an unlikely new sidekick - Perth-born Dean Brownlie.

However, even their heroics weren't enough to avoid nevertheless another Kiwi slump.

Vettori (96) and Brownlie (77 not out) made a file sixth-wicket stand against Australia, 158, to guide the Black Caps to 5-254 in their first innings, only for them to fold for 295.

Since becoming the youngest Kiwi to make his Exam debut at 18, Vettori appeared destined to be New Zealand's saviour - with the ball.

But the planet class off-spinner is making a habit of saving the Black Caps' blushes with the bat.

Way back in his Check Barcelona debut in 1997, Vettori batted at No.eleven behind Geoff Allott - whose career 1st-course regular is four.86.

And soon after his initial 5 many years of global cricket, Vettori's average hovered about 17.

These days Vettori is justifiably at No.7 - arriving at the Gabba with 4230 runs at 30.43.

I was embarrassed by my figures, Vettori explained of his batting turnaround.

I imagined I was a far better participant than that.

I am a good deal far more constructive when I get out in the middle - it has authorized me to flourish and be intense.

His emergence with the bat was never ever much more Malaysia Jerseys evident than at the Gabba.

In contrast to the best order's intense strategies - described by opener Brendon McCullum as reckless - Vettori batted inside of himself yet still cruised to his 23rd Examination 50 percent century off 70 balls.

As a lot as his batting has improved, Vettori showed on Friday he nevertheless has 1 area to enhance on - jogging in between wickets.

With his first ton in opposition to Australia - and seventh general - in sight, he inexplicably ran himself out.

I was quite Malaysia Jerseys proud of that - you usually want one more four runs however, Vettori mentioned of his knock.

The batting was acquiring simpler and less complicated so to be dismissed in that way was fairly disappointing.

I imagined Dean and I could have batted for a prolonged time but you have to offer with it.

In just his 2nd Check, a patient Brownlie, 27, lifted his greatest score to 77 not out - his 2nd straight unbeaten first course 50.

The former WA under 19s rep only moved across the ditch in 2009 but was injected into the countrywide squad by coach John Wright on a hunch.

Brownlie - who has a Kiwi father - had created his T20 worldwide debut for the Black Caps by 2010 and 1st Exam in October.

He seems like an elegant player, nothing appears to faze him - he has all the attributes, Vettori stated of Brownlie.
